 Dateline: UC Davis
News for Faculty and Staff of the University of California, Davis

The Dateline Mission — "The Town Hall"

Dateline UC Davis provides news and information to faculty and staff through print and online publications. We intend to be a critical center for the campus, a "town hall" of information, ideas and issues that has a real-world relevance to people on campus.

Dateline UC Davis is committed to interactive communication and participation within the campus as outlined in the Principles of Community. The newspaper fulfills its mission by providing timely and useful campus-related information and by offering opportunities for faculty and staff to communicate with each other about topics affecting the university. As encouraged by the Principles of Community, the newspaper is a vehicle for UC Davis to demonstrate "the right of freedom of expression" coupled with "a commitment to the highest standards of civility and decency toward all."

The Dateline Operation — "Contact us Directly"

The editor and associate editor are responsible for determining what is included or omitted in the newspaper. They make these decisions based on a story's timeliness and importance, its breadth of interest and whether it has appeared already in other publications. Stories that cover sensitive issues are presented in an informational, straightforward manner. Occasional stories that apply to a small number of readers may be published if the editor or associate editor believe the news is significant.

Story ideas are welcomed from the campus community. Please send them to dateline@ucdavis.edu or call 752-1932. While Dateline concedes it cannot cover each and every story idea — whether because of resources or interest level — the best way to see a story in print is to contact Dateline directly. Possible story or brief ideas can include seminars, community events, meetings, activities or new programs needing publicity. All items submitted are subject to journalistic editing.

The newspaper also publishes letters and forum pieces from members of the UC Davis community. The goal is to help promote a diversity of opinion and stimulate thinking — creating the "town hall" effect — while remaining mindful of the bounds of courtesy, sensitivity and respect.
