John Madigan, a veterinary professor who specializes in equine and emergency veterinary medicine, assists another rescuer in keeping a stranded heifer's head above water.. He and fourth-year veterinary student Jacqui Whittemore returned to UC Davis Saturday, Sept. 25, after spending more than a week rescuing animals from the North Carolina floodwaters that followed Hurricane Floyd. The group of animal rescuers also helped airlift via helicopter a horse trapped in 5 feet of water, using a sling that Madigan helped design. Madigan and Whittemore also scouted from the air for routes by which feed could be delivered to hungry animals.
