Students honor Smith with prize for teaching

Michael Smith

For outstanding teaching that makes learning an enjoyable and worthwhile process, history professor Michael Smith received the Magnar Ronning teaching award this spring from the campus student body.

This award is based solely on the recommendations of students like Lauren Hirshberg, one of the students who nominated Smith. She says he "creates a learning environment that is comfortable and encouraging. He talks to the students on a personal level, and makes it a point to know each of them."

The annual award was revived by Associated Students of UC Davis President Phong La this year after a decade of dormancy due to budget cuts. The award is designed to express undergraduate appreciation for the valuable roles that professors and lecturers play on campus, and all undergraduates are encouraged to submit nominations.

Smith was picked by a committee that reviewed the nominations. Smith received a plaque and a $500 check.
