Breaking ground for the arts

UC Davis Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef gestures while speaking to the approximately 250 people who braved a hot sun to attend the event. Seated behind him are Lois Wolk, chair of the Yolo County Board of Supervisors, and John Webre, president-elect of the Sacramento Ballet.

The $60.9 million state-of-the-art Center for the Arts, scheduled to open in fall 2002, will be funded through a combination of university funds and private donations. At last week’s festivities, the Rumsey Indian Rancheria tribal council announced a $625,000 gift to the performance hall.

Earlier in the day, a brunch was held in honor of Chancellor Emeritus James Meyer, who long envisioned such a center. His former student assistants and members of the James H. Meyer Fellows gathered to announce their naming of the center’s Orchestra Circle, 200 of the hall’s best seats.
