TUNNEL VISIONARIES: Barbara Cooper and her twin toddlers Marian, left, and Pearl, take a first journey through a bike and pedestrian tunnel under the Union Pacific Railroad tracks at the east end of the arboretum. The Cooper girls, who attend nursery school at UC Davis, have been awaiting the final portion connecting the tunnel with the campus, Barbara says. Years in the works, the missing link of the Putah Creek Bicycle Undercrossing project is now open to the public. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for 9 a.m. April 2. The project, connects South Davis with the campus near Davis Commons and allows cyclists to avoid the freeway overcrossing at Richards Boulevard. The link is part of a $4.2 million city undercrossing project to include tunnels under West Chiles Road and I-80.
