The University Library, which checked out more than half a million books last academic year -- 532,340, to be precise -- is busy supplying students and other scholars with information.

Library patrons borrow more books as the year progresses so that spring quarter is the heaviest check-out time, according to Gail Nichols, head of the Access Services Department.

The good news is that fewer than 7 percent of the books checked out become overdue. The peak months for students and other scholars to use the library are October, March and June, somewhat coinciding with finals.

As for all those books taken from the stacks and left on tables or return carts last year, Nichols reports they totaled 358,323.
