UC Davis boosts its donations to United Way charities

UC Davis faculty and staff opened their hearts and their pocketbooks during this year's United Way campaign, pledging or contributing $239,498--8.24 percent more than last year--to Sacramento area community health and human care services.

UC Davis Medical Center employees were especially generous, contributing $14,255 of the $18,238 increase--a 16.51 percent jump in giving over last year. Main campus employees contributed $3,983 more this year, a 2.95 percent increase.

A final tally shows $138,907 was raised by the campus and $100,591 by the medical center.

"Thanks so much to all those who saw the need that exists right here in our own communities and stepped in to assist," said Maril Stratton, director of public communications and campus campaign chair. "Every gift--no matter the size--is so important and will bear dividends far beyond the dollars and cents donated."

Barbara Ross, UCDMC senior staff administrator and community relations manager and chair of UCDMC's campaign, credited the hard work of key campaigners ("people who were willing to go out and put up banners and ask people to contribute") and the support of UCDMC director Frank Loge for the campaign's success, as well as employees' ability to direct their gifts to several UCDMC programs.

Employees could designate gifts to more than 20 clinical and research programs at UCDMC and to the UC Davis Students First campaign, in addition to the 200-plus Sacramento area United Way agencies.

While the funds raised this year topped last year's total, employee participation slipped a bit. At UCDMC, 26.79 percent of all employees participated in the campaign, compared to 29 percent last year. On campus, 11.85 percent of all employees contributed, compared to 13.73 percent last year.
